Scope note
Rulers composed of light strips of wood joined so that the individual pieces fold and usually pivot in more than one plane; most commonly in 2-foot lengths with four folds. Historically superseded by zigzag rules, which are generally longer and have strips that all fold, zigzag fashion, in a single plane and by metal tape rules.
